We are in the middle of building a driveway.  Found "rotten" frost down at 7'. Ground was smoking.  This was last Tuesday in the clay knobs.  I didn't check the ground temp at the surface but I am not sure it's stellar.

are you serious? How is that even possible? Explains why all the hills were wet and holding moisture this year where they never had before.

Dead serious.  The excavator has been in business 60+ years and they have never seen anything like it.  The ground was smoking and you could see the ice crystals.  The field had standing corn stalks because I knew we were building the driveway so didn't work it last fall.  We were open all winter and the frost went in deep and fast.  Then the snow cover came and protected it.  The pit is opened now and had some rain on it but if we dig some more I will see if I can get a picture.
