Subject: Green River drift cattle documentary - economics question

NS Canada
Came across this documentary on the green river drift cattle drive, where some trail their cattle over a 100miles into the mountains for summer grazing and then work their way back for winter. As with any cattle outfit they're complaining about the economics and questioning their futures. But my question is why? They seem to have large head numbers per ranch with less ranches than ever, not a lot of equipment or facilities, just enough to put up some hay and a couple old sheds. So if these guy's cant make money, the rest of us should have quit yesterday.

Are the range leases expensive or something? Or are there several generations and several branches of the family trying to live off 1 income? They complain with the oil and gas activity that prices went up in town, but I know for a fact the US is a much cheaper place to live for goods and services. And some of them have energy leases bringing money in too.

Interesting video nonetheless.
