It may be a "tourist trap", but I am highly skeptical of those kinds of places, and for the most part, I did not get that impression there. Oh yes, they are making money off of tourists, to be sure. But that is what funds the whole deal...NO government funding at all from what i gathered. I just always assumed it was a federal park thing, like Mt. Rushmore or Yellowstone. Not the case. It was all created by an individual, now taken over by a foundation, with the same family still doing most of the actual work on the mountain...sons and daughters of the originator.
I guess for guy who really does not like touristy things, I was impressed by this organization and this family.
Once you are there, and start to grasp the sheer size of the monument, you can't help but be somewhat impressed, I think. | |
