Is 4,000 feet above sea level really a mountain or just a tall hill?

south central kansas
I think I could handle the climb from 500' to 1,800' fairly easy. But I know I would be one almost dead dude trying to start at 5,000' and going to 6,300' . I know I get all out of breath and tired just trying to put on skies at the top of the mountains in Colorado. I'm not really trying to argue I just am always intrigued with how the altitude messes with everything. If we can get away we like to go to Colorado couple times a year. It seems I'm never quite as prepared as I think am for the altitude difference.
