Subject: You have to be willing to walk away if it’s not profitable.

We had a farm that we had rented for 25 years on a year to year basis. It was an extremely wet farm that needed tile but a good chunk didn’t have an outlet. The owner came to us in 2013 and said that we were making too much money and he wanted double the rent or he was going to farm it himself. We told him good luck farming it and left on good terms. The guy who is doing his custom planting and harvesting is a joke, can’t get stuff out on time even in a good year. There has been a few years when some didn’t get planted due to weather. This year, the whole farm is unplanted. If we would have caved in, we would have lost money on that farm four out of five years.
