Centralia, MO | They're called "suckers" as others have mentioned. Can't really say I've ever seen a sellable ear of corn on a sucker and they just pull moisture and nutrients away from the main stalk and ear. If it were me and I had time I'd go along with a hoe or corn knife and cut them off.
We used to always plant sweet corn at the end of a large test plot we did every year. Can't say we ever had any cross pollination from the plot to the sweet corn since it was all planted the same day and the sweet corn dropped it's pollen way ahead of the field corn.
