Ridgway, IL | Got started baling straw this afternoon around 330p. We have been out of straw for 2 months. This is the first year that I can ever remember that we didn’t grow wheat, so we are baling neighbors. Today in a 140ac field there were 4 s series Deere combines and drapers, a tractor and baler, payloader, 8 semis, auger wagon and tractor, and 3 trucks and flatbeds hauling straw. We got 180-200 rolled up before the dew set in.
Early wheat yields are 80-115bpa, most I’ve heard is 90-100 which is high end of normal around here. Fungicide has high rate of return this year in terms of yield and quality, really every year. It has become sop for most growers.
We have been using everything for bedding lately, I’ve gathered 150 fence row round bales from various neighbors in the past month for bedding. Additionally we have been using ground rice hulls, which I like better than ground straw. Very absorbent, pretty bedding. I plan to use it throughout the year to supplement the straw.
The concrete work on our hay storage barn is 1 day from complete. Contractor 2 started setting posts today and Almost got done with them all, I suspect they will brace and do side Perlins tomorrow. We have 2-4” rain forecast for next week so that will probably get delayed once again
They’re calling the light calf market up 5cwt this week, the strength of the calf market is incredible given feed cost and fed cattle market
