You'll want both. GPS for the path, laser scanner to confirm you won't run over anything.
If you tried to do a LIDAR-only solution, it would have to be smart enough to figure out what the end of the field looks like, and then make a decision to go left or right. Also, there is no easy way to have the machine return to a specific location when the task is complete.
