North East Wimmera district of Victoria.

+1   for the sugar and borax.

BUT you do not need such a huge quantity.

If ever the little annoying ants come into our kitchen, we mix as much borax as you could stack on your little finger nail with an equivalent amount of honey, and enough hot water to blend the two into a fairly thin mixture. Drop a few spots of this mix where the ants are 'tracking', and they will soon be gorging themselves. They go home and die, the sweetness attracts others, who get their dose of borax in the process.

Next day = no ants.

Works every time.
