Big Ben,

It might be profitable now, but will it be profitable indefinitely? And if it is abandoned, what happens?

Also just because something is profitable does not mean it is done. Sometimes the “corporate hassle” is not worth the profit, especially for a slim segment like what rural delivery would be. We see this today as private electrical utilities refuse to upgrade or properly maintain rural, low population distribution grids because they aren’t worth the investment.

Rural Free Delivery only exists because of a nationwide push and huge effort by a variety of farm groups (such as the Grange) around the turn of the century. RFD was one of the largest steps in lowering rural alienation in this country; I don’t see how there could be any benefit to upending it now.

It was much more important to have rural mail back before the existence of the Internet.

Most things that are profitable are done by someone. The fact that corporations sometimes don’t want the hassle creates opportunities for individuals and/or small businesses.

If there’s so little activity in an area that it isn’t served by the electrical grid and/or the mail, then people that desire to live there need to weigh the negatives of limited services in to their location decision. Fortunately for them, again modern
technology has made “off the grid” living possible without sacrificing quality of life.
