SW “Ohia” | GenX,
That is great! It’s amazing what some families have saved over the years in records. We don’t have anything from previous generations outside of a handful of photos.
Years ago I helped the local Fire Department burn down an old American Foursquare farmhouse for training. The elderly owner had recently passed away and his heirs were building a new house on the very nice farm. It had been in the family since the 1910s and he had farmed it himself until the 1990s.
As we were preparing to start, the family pulled an entire hay wagon load of boxes and paper bags up to the porch and start throwing them inside. They were FULL of farm records of all kinds. From cancelled checks, to seed tickets, to equipment brochures, ledger books, every receipt imaginable. We helped carry them in and I saw dates into the early 1930s. It made me awfully sad to see everything go up in flames, coming from a family where nothing like that exists at all.
