Washington Co Ks | I was visiting with a cousin and her family from New Jersey yesterday.They were interested in what it was like on the farm. When I told them that it was very expensive to farm they asked what equipment cost. I told her that a new combine would be in the neighborhood of $300000 and several other pieces in the $200000 range she about fell off her chair. One of them asked how we set our prices. I said that we don't that when we sell grain the elevator tells us what they will pay and when we buy fertilizer and chemicals from the elevator they tell us what we have to pay. They couldn't understand how we managed. I told them that yields had a lot to do with making a profit or not and we had little to do with that also. I will say that they were very interested in what I had to say and really listened to my opinion of things such as GMOs and other controversial subjects. We need to find a way to tell our story to city folks more on a one on one basis. | |
