Dad used to disc, then chisel the fall stalk ground, but if we didn't have time to run the chisel, we'd disc it twice. Granted it wasn't the best disc in the world, JD 230, but it would do a decent job with sharp blades.

Residue sizing would be what I consider our disc's biggest short fall. If you want to get by with a single disc pass in the fall, I'd recommend calmer chopping rolls for your corn head if you don't already have them.

If we had to break out the disc after all these years I'd feel pretty comfortable doing a single fall disc pass following our calmer rolls, then a single pass with our 980 cultivator in the spring.
