I have never done it myself but Dad used to speak of planting corn 3.5 to 4 inches deep in the early summer. I think this was often spring plowed hay ground with a tendency to dry out quickly and probably lots of lumps. I wouldn't worry about your lost gauge wheel. Odds are it'll be up just a little later.
