Subject: military info

southwest mn
My Grandmothers youngest brother died July 24 1944 in France. Some of my older relatives said he was killed in Normandy. Was there still fighting at the beaches at that time, or could he have been killed moving inland later?

On his cemetary marker it says-PFC Herbert P Lorenzen 2nd BN HOS CO. 359 INF Army. What do these letters and numbers mean? I have searched for info but have had no luck finding anything. My other question is was he buried there or shipped home after the war? I have seen pictures taken at his funeral service showing the flower covered casket. His marker is in the family lot at local cemetary. Could it be an empty casket? My oldest sister said she remembers the funeral service.
