Subject: RE: Toddler car seats

What is her height and weight? She should still be rear facing at her age. Has she outgrown the height and weight limits of her current seat or are her legs touching the seat back/head above the back of the seat? If her legs are touching and she is still within the height/weight limits of the seat, that is okay. She can cross her legs and that is fine.

If she has truly outgrown the seat, meaning her head has less than an inch to the top of the back of the seat or she is going to be above the height or weight limit soon, you need to find a convertible car seat or 3 in 1 seat that she can remain rear facing in but can be switched to forward facing when that time comes. Keep her rear facing as long as possible which could even be as long as up to age 3 or 4 for a smaller child.

What I would suggest you do is go to a store and try out some of the convertible car seats, pick them up to determine weight. Make sure it is a car seat that whoever is putting her in their vehicle can handle and install correctly every time. Some car seats can be upwards of 30 pounds and although they may look great and have a lot of features, they may be too heavy for every caregiver to lug around and get installed tightly every time in their vehicle.

I am a certified child passenger safety technician, once you decide on a car seat you can look up technicians in your area online and go to an event or schedule an appointment to make sure you know how to install the new car seat correctly.
