I remember having pigs in dirt yards and farrowing in pens, yeah the "good" old days. Now they are in modern confinement. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the average pig has a way better life now. This stuff is an isolated incident and happens to a very small fraction of a percent of the animals. I'd venture to guess you'd be mortified if you really knew what happens on the picture perfect mom and pop farms when you're not there. I could walk in 100 confinement barns today and probably not see abuse either, but people don't sneak into grandpa's tie stall dairy to "undercover videotape".
Absolutely right, Abomb.
One other thing people seem to forget about mom and pop livestock farms is that not all of the labor force was there for their love of the job and the animals. Matter of fact, some of the kids were probably honing their hatred for certain jobs and animals as they were doing their jobs until they were old enough to leave the farm and never set foot in a barn again. Now those kids are decades down the road and can regale you with tales of their farm upbringing and how great it was, but they’ll probably skip the story of what happened the night they had to miss the high school dance to stay home and milk and ol’ Bessie decided she was going to be difficult.
