Faunsdale, AL | We had a 30' diameter silo dismantled and rebuilt about 10 years ago. A tornado had destroyed the dairy facility it was a part of and the surface drive unloader was sitting on the last 15' of corn silage that had been sitting there for 10 years or more.
The surface had rotted down a lot, probably 5-10 feet and the unloader was severely rusted from sitting on the rotting silage, but when the bands were removed and the concrete staves pulled away from the solid silage in the bottom, within 6 ", the silage was bright colored and although it smelled strong, it was good. Owner was cranking up a loader to feed it to some cattle as we loaded up and left. | |
