If it says 40 watt, then it is a T12 bulb, which is old style. Bulbs are measured in eighths of an inch; T12 is 12/8ths or 1-1/2". T8 fluorescents replaced T12s, but they are now being replaced with LEDs. There are direct replacement LED bulbs that will use the ballast, but most of them use the T8 ballast. I would get a direct wire LED bulb, where you get rid of the ballast and take 120 VAC directly to the sockets
