W Texas | I may have read it wrong, but pretty sure he is buying hay for 20-25/roll. Not getting it custom harvested on his own property. If that is the case, all of this talk of getting it baled on time is irrelevant. He's buying it already baled and the hay guy has already assumed all the harvest risk.
If you are retired and value your time at $0.00, you can harvest hay for less than that, but you still aren't calculating the value of the standing crop, which is way over $20/roll.
Old equipment works until it doesn't, then parts are hard to find and you are tinkering with a bushing or bearing while it is raining on your windrows. There is no free lunch in the hay business.
