Washington Co Ks
I agree with hooking the chains in an x. The local co-op had trailers with only one chain. I always hated to hook up one chain but if I met a cop on the highway and he didn't see a chain I would be in trouble.

I had a stock trailer come loose in the yard once. The crossed chains held the tongue up off the ground. I also hauled a load of cattle 30 miles with the trailer not locked on the ball. When unloading I thought the back of the trailer went down quite a way so I pulled out of the way and checked. Sure enough the hitch was just sitting on the ball. The latch must have closed before the hitch was completely down on the ball. Luckily there was enough weight on the tongue so it didn't come loose on the highway.
