Do you need more than the base station for a 2 story house? Replacing a really old Linksys that can't talk over the microwave in the kitchen.
You can try with just the base and add a meshpoint later if you need it but I'd just get the kit right away. 5ghz signals don't penetrate like 2.4mhz does.
