The threads are for a thin nut that pulls the end cap against the snap ring to hold things together. If the nut was there you would remove it then push the end in and remove the snap ring then pull the end out .There is a spring inside pushing against the snap ring and sometimes the end plug sticks so you may need to tap on the plug with a hammer to get it down far enough to remove the snap ring.
