Can't help you with corn questions, but hard thresh is more aggressive then small wire. We use hard thresh in L1 and R1, small wire in L2 and R2, and skip with in all 3 and 4 positions. No rotor cover plates installed. Make sure you have the cover installed over chopper pan grate.
