Subject: RE: Best choice for horse hay?

Central Western VA Mountains
On our small farm, all we do now is square bales of hay for primarily horse customers. Our two major obstacles were picking up hay customers (all of them have an existing supplier or are buying price alone) and competing against the cheap low quality hay makers with a price that would pencil out a profit, yet not drive off potential customers.

We found Timothy, Teff and a very nice weed free mixed grass hay is the ticket. We take core samples of the hay, have it tested and share those results. Our hay has historically been low in sugar (ESC+starch), potassium and iron. There are a lot of special needs horses and we can provide hay that meets their needs and find customers coming from other states to buy our hay.

My advice is make a quality, tested hay and it will support a good price and draw customers.

Good luck!
