Subject: Breeding a cow an hour away

Madison Co. Virginia
Got a call tonight that a friend's cow was in standing heat. After milking, I threw a straw in a 95 degree thermos, and drove 45 minutes to breed the cow. Have done this several times in the past with good results. The cow is a holstein/angus cross, and I'm usually breeding her to angus, so the genetics do favor high conception rates.

I'm sure that I am not the only one who has done this. What do you do when breeding a cow that's nowhere near the semen tank? How long do you trust the semen to stay good in the thaw water?

Is there any cheap and simple method of transporting a frozen straw?
