I think you'd be fine with the 18:1 CR pistons if you run with a wastegate turbo. The current Cummins X15 engine uses a 17.2:1 CR for the high HP engines, and 19:1 for the economy series.


I don't know about the X15, but I always thought the ISX didn't seem to have headgasket issues to speak of. Even though I have a lot of respect for the older Cats, I always thought they seemed to have more headgasket issues than Cummins. IDK.

I do like plenty of power too, so that's why I recommend the lower compression pistons. Then you can build some power if you ever want to. Our C-15 6nz has 650 +/- to the ground. 750+ at the flywheel.
