I can say from experience if you use a stock 6.0L GM engine at or anywhere near its rated HP output it will be bad at fuel economy.

100 hours per year doesnt seem like a great many, but from personal experience a 6.0L will get about 6 mpg towing a load at interstate speed. I believe at 70 mph, and using 6 mpg, that works out to roughly 11.6 gallons an hour. Using todays fuel prices, a diesel engine that gets 25% better fuel economy would save over $750 every 100 hours.

I should add that all our pickups burn gasoline - theyre cheap to buy and cheap to fix but if I needed an engine to work at rated HP output Id lean towards one that burned diesel. Guess it depends on how many years you plan to use it.
