Subject: RE: LSW vs Tracks for Planting?

Iowa - Floyd County
We run LSW's on the planter tractor, on 22" rows so we plant 4 rows into the tire tracks. We had 380's on the planter tractor before that and the pinch effect was terrible. We looked at tracks before we switched to LSW's but being all no-till we didn't like the berming on the ends. We found out that if the ground is in good shape to plant you don't notice any difference in plant heights, if it is a little wet the plants in the tire tracks are shorter than the ones that aren't. Emergence was the same. We did yield checks on the rows that were shorter where it was wet when we planted and there was no difference in yield, the plants were just shorter. We like the LSW's, excellent alternative to tracks in a no-till situation, only downfall is no in crop work with them so that's an issue if your short on tractors.
