Another issue that can happen with small engines is that some of the parts in the carburetors are now being made out of plastic to lower the cost. While those plastic parts can take the exposure to gasoline, it wouldn't be unheard of for them to deteriorate, warp, or lose their flexibility when over time they are exposed to sunlight and extreme temperature changes. So the mechanics replace parts that they say ethanol damaged and comment that this never happened before ethanol. Well, the carbs probably didn't have any plastic parts in them back then either.
