Your mechanic needs more education and experience. Ethanol is not dirty. Something in the supply chain of ethanol is. The alcohol part of ethanol is a very good cleaning agent. The dirt could have been anywhere in the delivery line.

The truck that picks up at the alcohol plant, the blending plant, the truck or pipeline from there to your supplier, the suppliers tanks and trucks, your tanks, and finally your equipment tanks.

I've cut open old fuel tanks both gas and diesel and used a razor a razor blade to scrape the varnish and dirt off the inside.

It happens in diesel supply chains with soydiesel as well. Those who have good luck with biodiesel and ethanol have clean supply chains. Those with bad luck have dirty supply chains.

As far as ethanol having water in it, that's a big diversion. When alcohol or ethanol leaves a processing or blending plant there is NO water in it. The water is from condensation inside tanks. If every tank was properly capped and sealed condensation would not be a problem. Alcohol absorbs moisture. If you have 1/2 a tank of ethanol sitting out where there is a temperature change of 40 degrees from day to night, your tank is going to displace half the air in the tank from day to night. If hot air is drawn into the tank and then cools down, condensation=water. In a tank of pure, non ethanol gas, the water will settle on the bottom. In a tank of ethanol the water will be absorbed by the alcohol. Water in ethanol complaints always come from tanks without a proper capping/venting system for the tank.
