I asked a hydraulic engineer the same question once. I told him we have hyd motors around the farm without drains and they work just fine.....so why do some motors "require" a drain. He said " Well, just because a motor doesn't have a drain port doesn't mean it shouldn't have one. All hyd motors should have a drain line. Some manufactures make motors without a drain port for particular applications, but it's still not a good idea". Agree? Disagree? I wonder if a motors designed to run with out a drain line ( example: hyd reel motors) are perhaps more designed for a particular application.
