Boone Co. Iowa | I will probably sound a bit like a conspiracy theorist, but I think that these corn plants that are typically knee high by the 4th of June and waist/chest/shoulder high by the 4th of July have generally had a cooling effect in the midwest. Similar too (but obviously not as strong as) a lake or ocean.
That won't be the case this year. Memorial Day week is often when a guy might start hitting the sidedressing in this area (albeit the early guy, with early corn, with a lot of acres). Our little corn seeds that sat in the ground for 2-3 weeks all popped out of the ground a week ago on a 95 degree day (which made me pretty damn happy). But they are still pretty little, all things considered.
