Visited some relatives on Pelee Island last year and they had similar traps hanging on their porch so took note and built a few to try on our carpenter bees.

The ones I saw and built are a hollow box from plywood with a plastic drink bottle below.

They said they worked, we will find out this year

Prior to that I used wasp spray foam with the straw stuck in any holes.
Would flush out the young sometimes and contaminate the adult enough to have them die too

Traps look easier if the work.
