Subject: Crazy Question: What Could I Plant for a Summer Straw Crop?

SW “Ohia”
Hello All,

Our area is currently in a major straw shortage and prices absolutely reflect it. Very little wheat was drilled last fall due to the awful weather so I don’t see it changing. With bean prices not being exciting, and with some cheap/free rent ground that has been in soybeans for over a decade, the idea of attempting something odd appears enticing.

Soft red winter wheat is the only small grain we raise locally, other than rye put on for cover. I know nothing about spring wheat, barley, oats, etc.

Give me some creative ideas with an emphasis on straw production, not grain yield. Grain could be sold to some local cattleman if I take it to harvest. My main straw market is for landscapers and excavators to use for blower mulch.

I may even attempt to square bale some soybean stubble this fall if it comes down to it.
