Madison Co. Virginia | Besides the breed, note the price. Who's paying 5500 for an older cow? Particularly when you consider the set-back she's likely to have by moving to a new herd. Even if she was bought as a family milk cow, that's still a pretty stressful change to go through. Based on my experience, you have only a 80% chance of an old cow surviving her first lactation after moving.
Also, if I were buying a family cow(or putting her in a herd), I'd want one who's starting with more flesh on her bones. Slightly chubby is better than too thin, in this case.
Registration papers don't increase the value that much.
