+1 on playing with the dte and dce. i wish i could help more but i use mine with ag leader. even when everything is set right, i have to go change the baud rate off and back on to 19200.
It is daunting getting it set up the first time by yourself. But the great the challenge, the greater the sense of accomplishment.
