I've been told this is a territorial thing, with one (or a pair) of Cardinals essentially staking out their claim, and fighting their reflection.
Years ago, I had a male leave some permanent scratches in the side view mirror of my truck. Once I figured out how it was happening, I'd stretch a sock over my mirror if I was gonna be away from it a while.
