Subject: How to protect piston seal from sharp internal threads on cylinder barrel when installing?

West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge

Thread title says it all.  Resealing a hydraulic ram with internal threads, which the piston has to pass by to install.  It is one of the nasty hard yellow square seals with an O ring underneath.  Warmed up the seal with boiling water before installing, but of course, it still expanded slightly, using a ring compressor to shrink it back down tight into the groove.  But how do I get it past the threads in the barrel without cutting it?  I recall a thick sticky product, about the shape(and consistency) of a big wax crayon that could be used to fill in the threads temporarily.  Anyone know what that is, or what else would work?
