Killing off the barley was just an experiment to make the N more available. Half the test area was sprayed to kill the barley and half was not in 90 ft strips, all logged so we can compare affect on yield. Two years and ago we documented a 25 bu corn yield penalty by planting corn green into a grass cover crop- wheat.

So this is just an experiment trying to get C N ratio closer to ideal. Just trying to learn what works for us. Oats may work but do not grow them and so do not have experience with them. We know barley and have it readily available. Researcher wanted to use rye but we said no since we grow seed barley and do not want to risk contamination.

Quite a bit of fall growth on barley... I killed it approx 3 20.
