farmer4321 - 4/13/2019 10:17 It may be more work and not quite so convenient but back in the '70's and '80's guys around here used to do it all the time. If I hunted around, I could buy a dozen or more sows (or gilts) inside of a week and be in business. I've got enough soybeans in the bottom of my bin to feed sows until the new crop and then I'll have all I'll need. As slaughter facilities, I suspect that if the price of pork goes up locally, my pigs would all go local and thereby free up that much more to go international.

Yep

You go do that, find another 400 people to do the same and you'll have the equivalent number of sows as one new 5000 hd sow unit.

Find 800 people to do the same and you'll have the same amount of production as that new 5000 hd sow unit and modern finishing buildings.

There's a reason you don't see much of that anymore.   Even with $50/head profits its too damn much work for the return on your time.
