Subject: RE: Vaccination expense

South Texas
The idea of raising cattle like children is foreign to most Texans. A rancher’s job here is pretty basic, keep fences good enough, put out hay when there is no grass, pour some cubes every once in a while so they’ll come in the pen, and catch calves a few times a year. Maybe even drop out some salt blocks. If there is a cross fence the gates are probably open, cows calve themselves in the brush, and the bull breeds them when he wants. There are even quite a few replacement cows and bulls just because they didn’t come in the pen. At least this is the way many of the old guys who own most of the land do it.

I’m sure it is as foreign to many of you as your way is to people here. Not to say that there aren’t some around who manage cows much more intensively.
