You can download windows ten and try it unactivated for a spell. Keep using it and you’ll have some nag screens or such until you break down and buy a key. They, uh, really aren’t that bad.
If you’re dead set on free I’d look into a Linux distro. I’d suggest Debian for starters. Should be able to install on a thumb drive and try out that way without buggering up your windows install.
