Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership class 14's (they're now accepting applications for class 15: http://karlprogram.com/ ) international trip was to Cuba (and no, not Cuba KS). The class originally consisted of 30 participants but we were down to about 25 for the trip. Consisted of visits to Havana, Trinidad, and Vinales.
The core of the trip involved exploring the country's urban farming, cash crop farming, and subsistence farming. There's a lot of poverty there, but surprisingly also a lot of wealthy people: those in good with the government, working a side job where they interact with tourists (tips!), or working in illicit business...to say prostitution is big in that country is a gross understatement. Maybe illicit is not the correct word...different culture and may be legal there? Cops didn't shoo them away from us...
The military presence is not near what I expected. Law enforcement was thin, too, until late at night. Of course, we had a tour guide with us that was working for their government...so maybe we were steered away from certain areas without our knowledge.
