Really shaking my head at what a person has to go thru today for a CDL. Got my commercial DL in 1959 at 16 years old. Didn't have to take a drivers test because I already had an operators license. First load with my commercial license was a load of chemical from a plant in Odessa, going to Alamosa CO. Picked up a load of alfalfa meal in NM on the way back to TX. That started my history of driving a truck, run it all summer then work in the grain elevator each evening after school and on Saturdays. Fast forward to 1991 and I was grandfathered into the CDL with only a written test. Did not have to drive. Dropped my hazmat endorsement when I retired 2005 then changed my CDL to a Class A when I renewed 2014. With the class A, I can still drive to haul my own crop and equipment.
