Subject: RE: Alfalfa as Cash Crop

Virginia
I have a windrower, big sq baler, rakes, tenders nice hay barns the whole 9 yards. For the last 3-4 years milk prices have sucked. This equals hay prices suck. Dairy market used to be a good place to send hay, but they have no money now....
I switched to soybeans and that is feast or famine also.
I don't know what the future holds, but it's pretty damn bleak in my opinion.
If you must try it, I'd grow a good grass blend, or pure Timothy, brings as much if low potassium as alfalfa and nowhere the input cost.
Remember though a year like last year you couldn't make hay for all the rain, but crops grew like mad, it just wouldn't stop raining to get them out the field.
Just my opinion.....
