| On my farm and a farm where I rented a house for 40 years crusting between planting and emersion was a significant problem if it rained before the plants emerged. Took 8 or 9 to the foot to be strong enough to break the crust. Otherwise the little plants crushed themselves while failing to emerge.
I've seen reports on this forum in years past going down to 48,000 beans per acre yielded good, but they planted twice that population then cut out half the sprouts (typical of cotton planting). They promised to cut the population further but I haven't seen any reports.
Most of the university research I've seen reported look more at the lower population reducing costs so increasing profit.
I've had bushy beans that in 30" rows filled in the 30" space so much it made walking the field difficult. Would have filled the rows with seeds at least 15" apart.
