central michigan | I got in a conversation on social media the other night with a grower from Nebraska. He mentioned that they usually put their first pass of N on wheat with flat fan nozzles. The thought process was to burn the wheat to stress it and promote more tillers. The theory kind of makes sense, damage the growing point enough to cause the wheat to send out more tillers to compensate for the injury.
Here in Michigan we have always tried not to burn the wheat, kind of a never let it have a bad day thought process. That being said, much of our wheat is really thin after a cold fall and what is looking like a late greenup. All of this got me to thinking... Potentialy I could put some straight product on or carry a herbicide with 28% if the timing and ground conditions cooperate. Anyone have any experience doing this? Any pointers if a guy was going to try some? | |
