There are a number of methods of looking at this (and I am by no means a researcher or think like 1). If you were doing research you would do a randomized complete block design. I think that is out in most farmers situation.

Here is what I would do. Assuming you have a 24 row planter and GPS guidance, fill the entire planter with traited seed. Plant every other pass. Empty the entire planter, fill with conventional seed and plant remaining passes. Combine 1 pass out of the center of 24 rows for yield data, repeatingacross the field. The same would work for split planter but you are relying on combining guess rows and so forth. Repeating this across a couple fields give better confidence in data.
