southern MN | We need to maintain our infrastructure.
Gavin’s Point needs dredging. No one wants to ‘waste’ the money on upkeep.
It’s that simple.
This was an extreme water event and flooding was going to happen.
Gavin’s Point was always in control this time. They can open the dame to 160 water flow. They went from 32 to briefly 100 to keep up with the situation, for quite some time they were over 70. They had 2 gates frozen, they allowed the water to flow over them to thaw them in case things got worse.
Reading between the lines, bad things happen downstream if they release more than 70.
If we maintained our infrastructures in this country so there was more storage available, and/or if they would have drawn down the resivor 2 weeks earlier when the heavy snows were clearly evident they could have avoided releasing so much water at such a bad time. Keeping below 70 probably.
There would have been massive flooding, but downstream of the dam would have been less worse than it is now.
The Corps has multiple goals and needs for their resivors, electric generation and recreation need full resivors while flood control needs empty ones. I don’t know enough but to be dangerous but it appears since the 1980s recreation and epa concerns wanting full resivors has won out over other concerns across the country, local residents are no concern any more.
And we all every one of us don’t push our government to take care of the old infrastructure we have in place, it looks like all dams are silting in all over. We kick the can down the street it’s good enough who wants to pay for that.....
Plenty of blame to go around, and massive flooding was a given in this deal.
It could have been handled a little better tho, both short term management that was obvious but not fitting current policy; and long term upkeep. There would be a little less damage going on.
